People of a Feather

So, one of the cool things about all these VIFF events we've been attending (besides the delicious finger foods n' free libations) is that you can meet some really neat people - and hopefully learn about some cool films you might not have otherwise discovered.

Tonight Jim n' I will be checking out a documentary called "People of a Feather" made by some friendly filmmakers we've met at a couple of these events. Since we'll be headed out the door shortly, for the sake of time, here's their synopsis, screening details and trailer:

People of a Feather

Utilizing astonishing time-lapse photography captured over the course of seven years, Joel Heath illustrates how a traditional way of life is being ravaged by environmental change. On Hudson Bay's isolated Belcher Islands, the community of Sanikiluaq has long relied upon the eider duck and their down feathers (the warmest in the world) for survival. However, the runoff from nearby hydroelectric dams has resulted in an increasingly volatile ecosystem and triggered massive die-offs in the ducks. In turn, the Sanikiluaq people are left wondering how they and their culture will prevail.

After the screening, they'll be hosting a party/fundraiser at a nearby pub. It sounds like a lot of fun. Tickets are by a $10 donation, and get you a free drink, appetizers, and door prizes. There'll be displays, a silent auction and live music. Best of all, the $10 donation goes to the Arctic Eider Society, giving back to the people in the film. Awesome.
